Is a backup gun overkill or essential?

I will say it depends on your life. If you're in high-risk situations, sure. For average civilian carry? Probably overkill. I know guys who carry two guns daily, it is good for them. I carry one quality gun I trust, I rather master one platform than be mediocre with two

I agree that it's best to get really good with one setup. Keeping things simple helps me think clearly when I'm stressed. Extra gear just makes things harder. I become confident by doing things over and over, not by having a lot of backups, at least in my life.
