Been mulling over the idea of building my own AR-15 for a while now, and I've finally started diving into parts. It feels overwhelming, honestly. There seem to be some decent deals out there if you're willing to hunt for them. But I'm still trying to wrap my head around what’s actually good gear and what’s just hype.

I plan to keep it simple and go for a basic rifle build, probably sticking with 5.56 since it sounds like the standard route. But I'm open to options if anyone thinks there’s something better for a newbie.

I've seen a bunch of brands tossed around online. Are there any you’d say to steer clear of? And what about those sneaky extra costs that pop up? I'm just worried I’ll screw something up since I hear there are plenty of rookie mistakes to make.

Or is it smarter to just buy a pre-built one? I keep going back and forth on this. Any wisdom you folks can share would be awesome, even if it’s just something you learned the hard way. Thanks!

Stick with the build, man! It's way more rewarding. My biggest rookie mistake was cheaping out on a lower parts kit, I ended up with a gritty trigger and a headache. so for a first build, just get decent, reputable parts, nothing crazy. It's a fun project, you won't regret it

Building my first AR went well, even though it got a little messy in the backyard one weekend. Get decent upper and lower receivers, don't blow your cash on unnecessary fancy stuff, grab the tools and spare parts you actually need but be careful when you're putting it all together. If you're not into tinkering, just grab a pre-built one.
