What old timers know that no hunting app can teach you

There's this guy at camp that's been hunting the same property for forty years. He doesn't need an app to tell him where the deer are, he already knows which hollow holds them when the wind swings south, where that old apple tree sits that's been a feeding spot longer than I've been alive.

That's the thing about old timers, they don't know what deer generally do, they know what the deer on the property do.

Apps give you data and that's useful. But it took that guy four decades to learn what no algorithm is going to figure out for you. Take the data, sure... just make sure you're also listening to the guy who's been watching this same treeline since before you were born.

There’s just no substitute for that kind of long-term familiarity, some knowledge only comes from showing up year after year and paying attention to the small changes.

Good post. Apps can give patterns but they can’t replace time on a specific piece of ground

Forty years on the same ground builds a kind of knowledge that has no download button and no shortcut worth taking seriously.
