Are shot timers a necessary training tool?

I will say necessary if you're serious about defensive shooting. You need objective feedback on your speed. 'I think I'm fast' means nothing and data doesn't lie. Even a cheap $30 timer will show you where you actually are rather than where you think you are. Ego is the enemy of improvement
