New URI student trying saltwater fishing for the first time

I just started school at URI and my roommate keeps telling me the shore fishing here can be nonstop action. I only have my freshwater rod from back home in Michigan. If I want to catch and release without targeting anything specific, what line strength and leader should I run off the rocks?
 
Use 20 lb braided line so you can cast far and it won't break easily. Then tie on a 3-foot leader made of at least 25 lb fluorocarbon, that heavy leader will keep your line from snapping on the pointy rocks.
