I’ve been looking into shotguns for home defense and could use some tips from those who’ve been there. I’m weighing the 12-gauge against the 20-gauge. I get that 12-gauge packs a punch, but I’ve heard 20-gauge might be easier to manage in close quarters. What’s been your experience with their stopping power and recoil?

Also, what should I keep in mind when it comes to barrel length? I’m thinking about stock setups too — anything that can really make a difference in a tight space.

Any specific models or brands you trust? Reliability is key for me. Plus, how crucial is training? I’ve shot a bit before, but I want to feel ready in case I ever have to use it. What kind of practice routine would help boost my confidence?

I'd lean 20-gauge if you want easier recoil and handling in tight spaces, barrel length and stock matter a lot, and good practice is importance for confidence.

I am curious about how much training you have had with firearms? This is the determining factor for making a suggestion. No experience or training, then keep it simple, 12 gauge, double barreled “coach gun”; one with short barrels. That are not that expressive, they are reliable and they are simple to run. Depending upon discipline and your location I would consider #6 or #8 birdshot or 2 3/4 inch #4 buckshot. The 2 3/4 inch #4 buckshot fires 21, .25 caliber pellets with one squeeze of the trigger. My personal choice is a Remington 870 with an 18 inch smooth bore barrel and #4 buckshot for inside the house. We live alone so no children to worry about, nor do we have close neighbors, so over penetration is not an issue. There are a lot of variables that go into choosing a home defense weapon. Again a double barreled shotgun with birdshot or buckshot is a formidable weapon

12-gauge gives more power but harsher recoil, 20-gauge is easier to shoot and still effective for close-range defense. Pick 18–20" barrel, reliable pump or semi-auto, train regularly with malfunctions drills and live-fire practice weekly
