Most violent encounters happen in about three seconds and within a few yards. Most range training happens at much longer distances with plenty of time and controlled conditions. That disconnect is important to recognize. Real situations are close, fast and messy and training should reflect that as much as possible.
 
 You hear that phrase, "three seconds, three yards," a lot. Just standing comfortably at fifteen yards on the range doesn't really prepare you; it just builds a false sense of security. You need to practice for when things go sideways not just for when they're easy.
 
Three seconds is generous when things go sideways.. most people only realize it was happening after it already ended

Yep, distance and time shrink fast in real life, training has to account for that chaos.
